Abstract
Logibai, S.A. is a 17-employee Spanish company which designs,
produces and sells since 1983 power electronic equipment such as: variable
speed motor drives, UPS, battery chargers and lighting controls for industrial
and commercial uses, mainly applications converting and stabilising electrical
energy. The range of customers is very wide, from electricity supply companies
to local administrations and industrial companies. The total company's
revenues were 2 MEUR during 1997. The company belongs to the industrial
sector of Industrial Control (NACE 33 in the classification system widely
used in the EU).
The company is installing customised systems based on their own technology
implemented by both discrete components and microcontrollers, carrying
out tasks of supervision and diagnosis of power systems, charging batteries,
motor speed variation, etc. These technologies - the only available at
the company prior to the Application Experiment (AE) - have however a
limited capability to innovate the current products and hence maintain
their competitiveness.
The rationale of this AE was to regain the competitive edge that was lost
due to the obsolescence of the previous product. The goal was the improvement
of the performance of the existing variable speed motor drive, using for
the first time a DSP-FPGA based control system. With this new technology
the product can be improved in several features, such as: faster dynamic
response, with a bandwidth of up to 1 KHz, keeping nominal torque at low
speed (0 Hz) and cos j = 1.
This new control system has been developed in 15 months. The development
cost of the project has been 90 KEUR to complete the prototypes and 42
additional KEUR for industrialisation. The total investment will be paid
back in 38 months, and the expected ROI after 4 years is 150 %, equivalent
to an average yearly rate of 11%.
The acquired experience will enable the company to improve other products,
the first one being the synchronous rectifiers used in UPS and battery
chargers.

| Detailed information
|
|
| You can also benefit from microelectronics
DSP, FPGA technology provided LOGIBAI, S.A. with the means of improving
its products and enhancing its market position. You can also achieve significant
benefits by acquiring the right microelectronics technology and utilising
it in your product or manufacturing process. You can get help from FUSE
to realise this.
FUSE is a technology transfer programme, funded by the European Commission to stimulate the wider use of microelectronics technologies by European enterprises to increase their competitiveness and enhance their economic growth. The demonstrator described here is one of many examples in the public FUSE portfolio covering the whole spectrum of microelectronics technologies and spanning a wide range of applications and industry sectors.
FUSE provides you with:
- Best practice in acquiring specific microelectronics technologies and conducting full development projects through the FUSE portfolio of real life demonstrator documents.
- Local training and expert support to plan your innovation realistically and help you conduct your project successfully.
Further information and support relating to this and other demonstrators can be obtained from the addresses below. |
