Abstract

Sa.Ni.Co with 6 employees (5 electronic engineers) produces and sells devices for reception and distribution of incoming satellite and earth television signals. Its annual turnover amounts to 0.5 MEUR covering by the 90% of its production, the 10% of the Regional market and the 0.5% of the National market. The remaining 10% of production is addressed to foreign countries.

The existing company experience refers to traditional electronics based on discrete components, PCB development and assembly. By this AE, the company aimed to redesign and manufacture, using SMD, its produced amplifier for terrestrial television bands (VHF and UHF) named SMD AM30.

The new device will replace the existing one to improve performances in terms of compactness, reliability and reusability, while allowing 20% costs reduction, 46% production increase (in the first year) and bettering its market share. In addition, the AE put Sa.Ni.Co. in the position of reducing the existing technological gap against its National and foreign competitors.

This AE has been very strategic for the company, since the acquired know-how and the technical results gave the company confidence in the adoption of new technologies allowing it to extend its amplifier offer to the satellite TV market sector, according to the customers' demand.

Moreover, the experience acquired in project management, particularly in preparing good proposals, allowed Sa.Ni.Co. to obtain a 2 MEUR funding from the Italian Government to build-up a new production plant for the company, with SMD equipment. This put the company in the position of internally manufacturing its products, with an increase of its employees to 18 people, against the 6 at the beginning of the AE. In addition, Sa.Ni.Co. decided to enter the market of service providers by manufacturing SMD PCBs for external customers.

The AE cost has been of 39 KEUR, with 9 months duration. The payback has been obtained in 17 months with a ROI of 195% over three years.
