Abstract
Real Time Service ITALIA srl is a small Italian company of about 10 people, located in Monfalcone, which operates in the telecommunications industry and offers call accounting solutions. The company has a strong design capability and the skills required to market its products through third party distributors and large OEM agreements. The company has developed a very sophisticated call accounting product called TAX gateway that has been particularly successful for its special features in the high performance but low volume market in Europe. The product is a standalone enclosure containing electronics and software which attaches to a non dedicated PC and collects and statistically analyses the call information. This product is based upon discrete components in SMD technology (Surface Mount Device) laid out on a 4-layers circuit board. In excess to the obvious specialised knowledge of the call accounting product requirements the company has a very good skill in designing microprocessor controlled systems and interfacing them to the PC world. This technology was essential into developing a product with unique features to reach the goal of bringing to the market a fully unmanned system for call accounting. Very high complexity and reliability is required in building such a product. Main market limitations were therefore in the cost arena. In order to beat the competition on European basis the company needed to reach the high volume market still maintaining the innovative feature of its design. So far growth in the high-volume low-end market was limited by cost. The only way was integrating everything including the microprocessor core into an ASIC. The company is now in a position to market its products far more aggressively and thanks to the microprocessor integration has reached independence from a critical supplier. Thanks to the improved performance of the Caesar hardware design new related markets (such as PABX alarm handling) are now within reach. Within the scope of the AE, the specifications of the call accounting product were customised in order to accommodate for the latest PC interface innovations, so that a feature rich solution could be accommodated under its umbrella. The duration of the AE was 22 months. The investment required to introduce the product to the market was 133.5 K of which 108 K was the FUSE investment and 25.5 K industrialisation costs. A payback of the FUSE investment is anticipated in less than three years of sales with a return on investment of 360% over a 5 year sales period. This AE is of interest of every Company involved in Electronic Consumer and Precision Instrument.
