Abstract

LAYER ELECTRONICS, established in 1967, has 18 employees, 10 of which are in the electronic field. The company mostly manufactures power electronics equipment for industry and services. The annual turnover of the company is of 0.5 MEUR, covering the 10% of the Sicilian market and 1% of the Italian market.

The existing experience of the company personnel mainly deals with power electronics and switching circuits and in the capability of implementing control parts by traditional PCB with analogue discrete components.

By this Application Experiment, LAYER aimed to introduce the DSP technology in its products, in order to migrate from analogue discrete technology to digital programmable controllers. The goal has been to improve the produced 40 kVA UPS by a DSP based board which adds several features to the product, such as: auto-test, remote control, low harmonic distortion, continuos tracking, etc., in line with the competitors' offer and as required from the market for this class of UPSs.

The improved system will allow the company to re-gain competitiveness on the market and to address foreign markets in North Africa. The increased sales, allowed by a better performance/price ratio, will give a turnover increase for this product by 7 times in three years. This will result in considerably higher profits that will pay-back the AE costs of 56,4 KEUR in 15 months, with a ROI of 421% over three years. The AE duration has been of 11 months.

The most important additional benefit of the AE is represented by the know-how acquired by the company personnel in using DSP technology. This will allow the FU to develop in a near future an innovative Voltage Source Frequency converter, derived by the solution carried out in this AE and that will give the opportunity of further expanding the market penetration of the company.
