Elsa is a company which, since 1984, develops, manufactures and mantains security systems for home application. Its annual turnover is of 5 MEUR, with 52 employees.

The market of the company is 70% at National level and 30% at European level.

The FU experience before the AE referred to Printed Circuit Boards and Sensor based Systems design, assembly and testing.

By this project, the FU aimed to improve the performances of one of its security systems based upon PIR (Passive Infrared Receiver), namely its power dissipation, physical size, electro-magnetic compatibility (with the final aim of realizing a wireless detector), while reducing its production costs.

The main objective of the AE is to replace the present off-the-shelf, non-optimized components used with a single mixed signal ASIC.

The technical targets of the AE have been to translate the functionality of the whole module (pre-amplifier, amplifier, filter, discrimination) onto a single chip with proper low-power design techniques. This translation has required a re-design of the analog part of the device by using proper circuits for on-chip filtering operations.
The economical objectives of the company have been to reduce production costs by 60%, as well as to become technologically aligned with the leading industries of the sector and to reach market share increasing of the 50%.

The AE cost has been of 112 KEuro, with a 18 months duration. The payback period is of about 20 months, with a ROI of 375 % over five years.

An additional benefit of this experiment is the possibility of the Company to escape its current cultural and geographical isolation.
